I assume this can be done. What software is does this well? What size SDHC card does one need?

What platform are you on?
As that will determine which application(s) you can use.

I use XP home edition. how much space do they take up when you rip them anyway?

So, you're looking at DVD shrink or similar. A traditional rip will take ~4GB. Can be less depending on the movie & audio.

Downsizing from DVD size to fit the IT screen + from 5ch audio to 2ch audio will put you in the 350-500MB range.

Get any standard DVD ripper (DVD Clone from Slysoft as one ex.) to rip the DVD's

Then use the Nokia Video Converter or tablet-encode to reencode the video to the tablet's best form-factor.

A search of DVD TO GP3 finds many programs to do this and small files result. I was able to get 9 movies onto a 6 GB card (and 100 songs) with space to spare.
