Hopeful that
If Sailfish can be coaxed into "acceptable use"
that getting Debian running (in a functional manner)
is not too much further down the track to achieve.

So is there a minimum nunber to reach for go - no go. A few thousand does not seem a large enough number to manufacture.

AFAIK, it was a go from the start. Otherwise the would not chose android and the rest. And preorders were open after the phone was finished.

They got debian working on the Gemini PDA, which is a similarish device so I don't see why you couldnt get something working in a similar state to that.
