I guess so... God knows there's been many requests for it...

To end-users, it would offer a way to see and regulate those applications individually which might be more battery-intensive; which should give better feedback towards power management strategies that can be utilized for Maemo 5 and beyond for developers.

Just a thought...
No need to plug into my applet; people can just call the D-Bus methods provided by Phone.Net directly to get the current network mode and set it.

But the question that comes to mind is: How would this be done without causing disruption (I'd imagine the mode continually being switched when an application starts/stops wouldn't be pleasant) and handling mulitasking would be fun...

I decided to make it 2G/3G switch only because, TBH, I wonder what you would want with such an applet if you allow the phone to switch between the modes for you.

But, anyway, the source code will soon be in extras-devel (it's been uploaded and built) so feel free to modify as you wish.
Hi qwerty, thanks for this and the updates.

Regarding this, could you use a radio button structure with 3 options:
[*]2G [ ]3G, [ ]DUAL

?

That would make it easily switchable. I have not started working with the SDK yet so I am not sure how hard this would be though. Just an idea.

Cheers!

Uhmm, so the context switching that I'm thinking of could have already been something required by the OS in respect to apps making the call whether they need/don't need 3G?

It would indeed be disruptive to the end-user experience. But, I'd wager that Nokia could stand for the positive Maemo press in being able to forward such an interaction between the application and wireless layers as something to enhance the customer experience considering current power limitations.

Thanks for the answer, that helped my mind out some more.

Useful applet for maximise battery life when 3G is not needed
But can you just build a script for, or say how to restore the original Dual mode ?

I'll put up a deb tomorrow in this thread allowing dual mode to be selected using a HildonTouchSelector but I will not integrate that feature into the -devel version, because I prefer quickly switching.
