http://scan.jsharkey.org/

Android is ahead...
That looks just like what we should have

The library they're using is zxing, which does 2D & 1D barcodes (good), but is written in Java (not so good).

Thanks , the image processing bit is what will make it fun, but against that (as it will take a while to write my own) is the fact that I should get something working asap to keep up momentum (i.e. use existing libs).

Looks like it uses a backend server to avoid lots of bandwidth-expensive looking at the different websites. Sounds good

Actually... java on the tablets is fairly solid, it's just slow... And not quite as full-featured, but it's getting there pretty rapidly.

Will this be able to read the 2D barcode generated by Firefox? I have a automated barcode generator plugin for my firefox and on my Nokia N95 I use this feature a lot which comes really handy for the long urls that I want to visit on my phone. So will this app work in that manner?
P.S. If N900 has it built in let me know. But did not find anything close to saying that it does.

I downloaded a barcode reader from extras-devel called "zbar" but I have no idea how to invoke it. What command do I use?

zbar is the backend that I'm using, it has a couple of command line test apps included, but it mainly a library.

Sure, if it's a datamatrix or a QR code (and it is almost certainly one of those two)

What about the barcode app compared to the Iphone, where you scan a product barcode and it shows you rating and information of these products.

Look here
