Any app or method to create a hotspot instead of an adhoc network on the N900? Or is this not possible due to hardware limitations?

I believe that its a driver limitation,
I think what you are looking for is a way to set the wireless card to master mode which I don't think is possible atm.

You could try using wifi hotspot its on the forums some where
Or using bluetooth its a bit slower than wifi but much less power consuming

Yes but it also creates an adhoc connection. This is something that Apple had the foresight to enable on their wifi drivers.

I don't believe the N900 is capable of broadcasting a wifi signal any other way than as an adhoc one.
