Hi,

Has anyone tried ssh -X from the device to a linux box with X ?

Will it possibly work ? I'm not even sure maemo uses X, anyone with insight ?

(I just made my N900 reservation yesterday, it will arrive next week \o/ )

it does work very well. try running xrandr -o left

to be fair, only simple x apps will be usable, mainly do to the maemo window manager. xlogo works great. but remember, thus device isn't really multi-window oriented so dialog boxes aren't great!!

I also had problems (I think) with menus - the first time I played around with gvim over X I managed to get the device into a state where the touchscreen wouldn't respond to touch. Took a restart to restore it.

That said, I hadn't expected to be able to do it at all. Very nice.

What an odd question. What made you think it might not work? I don't have mine yet, but it runs X, so I'd be seriously shocked if ssh was broken in that way.

lack of knowledge ?

I haven't messed with maemo...yet. It could be tons of reasons...

While searching the foruns i haven't seen anyone mention that, and it seems like an awesome feature for a mobile, to me.

Maybe not a full-featured ssh capable of X forwarding? Maybe N900 uses a frame buffer without X at all like many embedded devices?

Reasonable question I thought.

This is great! Just for fun I tried running emacs-snapshot-gtk, Open Office Writer, a python based concordance tool, and some other programs by ssh-ing into my ubuntu laptop (with the -X option). Everything was actually useable

I've been trying to do this the other way around... ssh -X from my PC into the N900. Sadly the N900 doesn't have xauth installed and I'm trying to figure out how to go about remedying this situation.
