thanks but.. 'Detekt is a free tool that scans your Windows computer for traces of known surveillance spyware used to target and monitor human rights defenders and journalists around the world.'

The nxx0 should avoid Windows as it is hell to secure with to many outgoings to .. where exactly? Using a proactive firewall like Jetico already reveals how its phoning all the time.

Is it available on n900? Using it to route (or reroute with Yamas or similar) should give a good listing of phone homes from windows, or is it using hidden gsm chips?

Yeah... install yet another piece of software to check if I have some extra software installed... a bit like at one of my ex jobs, where they were trying to solve the problems caused by having too many managers by... you guessed it... hiring more managers!

You have to centralise first to get a grasp how bad it is of an idea to then start hiring back and globlising, endless cycle of outsourcing and insourcing

My understanding of this project is that it's a spyware-detection tool designed to detect a very specific set of spyware on a Windows computer, which, IMNSHO, is a lost cause anyway. If you use Windows, then you're already 9 different kinds of screwed out-of-the-gate in terms of privacy.

[rant]

I don't get EFF sometimes. For such a long time, they've cared about the privacy of those who couldn't care less. Do they honestly think that folks concerned about their privacy use Windows as a daily driver anyway? Sure, that's a sweeping generalization about users of an operating system, but I think it's a legitimate question.

Don't get me wrong; I'm far from perfect. I have yet to begin fiddling with AppArmor (I really don't feel like constantly recompiling my kernel just to have both it and AppArmor up-to-date), and I would never trust the router issued to me by AT&T (or AT&T itself) to keep my traffic secure. Plus, my Firefox installation is far from hardened (it takes more than NoScript, Squid, opt-out cookies, and Ghostery to do that), and even if it was, I'd have to wildly change my browsing habits in order for it to stay that way (for example, no more active logins, persistant cookies, or shopping online from my own computer with a credit card).

[/rant]

More on topic though. EFF constantly has these misguided attempts at fighting survellience. If they really want to fight surveillence, then they should probably work to abolish the "Microsoft tax."
