When you plug the usb to N900 you should feel vibration.
Do you feel such?
If not - remove the battery for a wile and try again.
Other possibility is detachment the usb connector of your N900. In this case - go to Nokia Repair Shop...

yes I do the blue light comes on as well

OK, so try to continue with procedure for reflashing.
Try coupple of times, because sometimes PC is not recognizing the N900 and you are receiving: "no suittable device, waiting"...
Try couple of times and I hope you will have a luck.

unfortunately I have tried many times, but i am unable to get the device in R&D mode in order to flash
is there any other way other than holding down the U key?

Try with Linux (Ubuntu) or XP, Vista and Windows 7 have some problems... AFAIK.

yep, @kornolio is right!
I have same problems with Windows 7 64 bit and am using ubintu live cd and it works as a charm.
