Not 1.000, but 10.000 pcs.

I don't think this changes much if there are enough potential buyers for buying at least 1.000 devices. That means each buyer should first contribute 6 $ per device, to make this project continued. My question is, if there is enough interest for such step at this moment?

Contribution would be also indicator, how serious are all these potential buyers.

Can you trust the manufacturer to release the source after paying them though? That is the question...

It seems they have already reneged on the promise to release the source code, so who's to say they won't do the same again, or perhaps raise the ransom.

make them sign a legal document or look for some other place...if they plan to raise the ransom then they will decline signing such document.

Wait, are they breaking the GPL? Wouldn't EFF help you guys in this case?

I second that option - let's look for example at http://gpl-violations.org/news/20110620-avm-cybits.html

Anyway, 6000 u$d means 600 pcs at a price 10 u$d higher - we can just collect 10/20u$d from everyone interested in the project in order to give Smoku the chance to go on (and to all of us a full open source tablet). With a PayPal account or the like it won't be too hard. Count me in.

It would take too long. Plus, we want to find an OEM who sees long term value in open source so they continue to cooperate with us.
