Hi guys,

what do you think of this idea of mine for zooming in and out with a single finger?

It's a good idea but it might conflict with text (object) selection. I'll use different terminology:

tap-and-hold (1/2 tap) is for popping up a menu
tap is for activation
tap, tap (double tap) is for quick zooming
tap, tap-and-hold (1 1/2 taps) is for text (object) selection when contextually appropriate

So, maybe the zoom circle could appear with a tap, tap, tap-and-hold (2 1/2 taps). It would only be a 1/2 tap further than the quick zoom.

I thought you needed to pull out the mouse cursor with "from the left" that peter demonstrated for text selection. Did I miss something completely?

How is zoom in/out achieved with hardware keys in N900? I've only seen zooming done in the videos with the circular gesture.

It depends on the application.

You can use +/- hardware keys to zoom in or out, the browser uses the circle gesture.
It depends how one develops his own application.

Xournal will use the hardware keys.

@epilido you are right, the browser has a "mouse mode" to select text.

Ya, daperl's suggestion sounds good.

Btw, I'd much prefer a vertical 'ruler' to control the zoom level. Moving the finger forward (to the top of the screen) makes you zoom in, and backward (to the bottom of the screen) for zoom out.

Most people use these devices at an angle, never completely upright (perpendicular to the ground), thus my reasoning for 'up/down' = 'forward/backward'.

I second the up for zoom in and down for zoom out!
