My skype contact list was empty ("No Contacts") and this did the trick for me with one more step:
I had to fill in Gender, Birthday and Language fields on the PC client.
Then I deleted my N9 skype account and added it back again.
All the contacts showed up.
p.s. I have skype 5.10.0.116 on Windows 7
because I remember that when I bought the N9, about in agoust, skype worked also without that fields filled.. When I formatted the phone nothing more..

Tried all that, does not work :-(
UPD: worked finally! the first time my desktop client was unable to update the profile for whatever reason.
