Just as long as it's not slower than a GPRS connection it can be useful :-)

The author of iodine says that the maximum throughput of iodined is 1Mbit...

Yup, I read that. But I'm more interested in what a real-life minimum looks like :-)

This shouldn't be a productive internet connection. It is intended for the quick mail check I think. So if you are on vacation like me in a week this is really helpful

Okay, despite the odds (for someone like me :-), it actually works !

I just tried three captive networks around my workplace at lunch time, and got a successful "iodine handshake" each time -- meaning client, server, domain delegation and router/firewall/NAT are all set up properly, which is a minor miracle in and of itself :-)

The first two, Swissair (Hilton hotel) and SFR (local Vodafone) would not load the web page at the other end of the tunnel by IP address. I don't know if this is due to crippled DNS or marginal Wifi signal. But the local Starbucks had a strong signal and let me see the web pages perfectly. Yay...

Actually it was faster than I expected -- not something you'd browse your Flickr collection with, but certainly good enough for text-based browsing and webmail.

Now I need to set up asinus' script on the tablet, and configure forwarding/routing/NAT on my server so that I can actually see something else than my own web site... I have a feeling this is going to be the messiest part of all (except if it's already in the Howto :-).

Hey asinus,

I added a subdomain at that site (freedns) chose the "NS" Service. So is this it?

If the NS record for the freedns subdomain points to the A record for your iodine server in your real domain, yes, that's it :-)

What should be the most complicated part is made easy thanks to afraid.org.

I am using dd-wrt on my router and there is no tunneling device. Does anybody have a clue how to fix this?
~ # iodined -f 10.9.0.1 blabla.ignorelist.com
iodined: open_tun: Failed to open tunneling device: No such file or directory
I really need this to work until Thursday since I'm leaving for 2 weeks then...

This sounds extremely interesting. I'm going to have to give this a try later.
