Regarding the anti-intellectualism. You cannot honestly say that *this* is the age of it. Every age is the age of anti-intellectualism. I bet the 18th century Swedish peasants were just as suspicious of Mr Celsius as 21st century British fishermen are of Forbes analysts trying to explain to them that staying in the common market is better for business.

The main difference is that the 18th century peasants did not vote.

I didn't get that. But I'm happy you took the opportunity to pointing it out and that we in the end came to the same conclusion.
