Hi

How is a cell phone layer going to work with Maemo and open source? Ari has said before that the IT is not a cell phone, so that development is unrestricted. Should IT become a cell phone does that mean restrictions on the device, sandbox environment? Or does development with Linux open source and usage of the IT's remain the same, develop and run what you want?

Yes, that s true. But I doubt for a few reasons that this easter egg is a gsm receiver. I can be wrong. I d like to be wrong.

Maybe something else?

"with the N800, we re going cellular; a cellular layer will be added, the change will be both sw and hw".
I hope it does not mean that a symbian version of the IT will come out. "Adding a layer" sounds weird if it means dropping Open Source.
Or the source should be fired immediately from his position for not understanding the basics of Communication devices.

I m not a specialist. Can anyone help outhere?

Do anyone know whether the N800 SD slots are (either) SD I/O? Maybe some external accessory, just to add *data* connection.. I'd appreciate it. Not a full phone, anyway

BTW, look at the image:

What is the icon between the Skype and the Web icon in the running apps area? Looks like a phone....

Ton.
The icon shown is Internet Call. You can see it for yourself by selecting New Internet Call from your Communication icon.

I'm just supposing, basing on my knowledge of other PDA hardware, but I'm not involved at any level (unfortunately, I'd say).

What about bluetooth gadget in the form of over-the-ear headset with GSM simcard slot. N800 could talk to it over bluetooth and it would be responsible for all the GSM/GPRS/EDGE/whatever traffic. So it's still "one device" with accessory, and there would be no need for tethering any more. Perfect N800 companion!

Now that is something I could get excited about.

Open source and cell phones are not mutually exclusive. Motorola has several phones based on Linux. PalmOS has taken the Linux route. Blackberries are Java based with all the API exposed. I had both PalmOS and Blackberry phone and I could run what I want including things that would render my phone useless. How is that different from N800? Phone has no magic properties that make it a special device. Gsm is just another transport mechanism like wifi or bluetooth that uses different frequency (for all I care to understand). Adding a gsm gadget to N800 should be no different then adding a usb ethernet adapter (not that many would care for it). The main trick would be in software to control it. But we all know that is completely possible.
