I figure even though this "is" a political issue...
I think it does indeed actually ascend beyond politics and become a Hollywood-esque issue of endorsement of wholesale madness [but that is only my humble opinion ..

It increasingly occurs to me that there is a madness present that has significant numbers of supporters ...

You'll love Ottawa, It's a beautiful city...beautiful area...
ask if you can get some time to go for a drive through the countryside.
You'll find it very lovely...especially this time of year with the leaves starting to change ...

hm...well for certain ...make sure you can get it on the flight home 1st....go and make sure to get some bonafide maple syrup...a good 1/2 litre or litre for take-home ...ordinarily I'd say get it in glass, but for travel ...get it in plastic...once home put it in sterilized [glass bottle sterilized on the stove with boiling water] glass...let it cool and pour in your syrup, cap it and refrigerate and pull out as needed.
Don't buy the tourist shop maple syrup, very expensive, get grade a at a proper grocery store, not cheap..but cheaper than the tourist traps ...most expensive maple syrup there is...but it is worth it, don't let it get hot...that is worth the time and money to spend on it [stuff is as costly as gold outside the country]...Love the stuff...as a kid on the farm we used to do huge batches of maple syrup every spring when the sap would start to run ...bestest sweet on par with honey from the hives...
