can someone help me understand the no 3g on AT&T comments...

Is this because the n900 only uses HSPA & not HSPDA???

I think it has to do more with the type of frequency.

Anyway I'm going to T-Mobile. Debating if I want to..

a) get an individual plan 55-65 dollars (the $10 being if I want the fav 5 or not, 300 minutes + unlimited smartphone data and 300 SMS).

b) wait for the black project to see if that $50 unlimited all has any merit

c) get a family plan with girlfriend (who will be my fiancee next year ) with an add-on data plan for myself.

The problem with C is that then I would get locked into a contract..unless she also gets an unlocked phone..

thanks...

I was thinking it was a combo of frequency at first, but when I look at the specs of my nokia n79 (which I get 3g from ATT) on the only difference I notice from the n900 is that the n900 has HSPA (700,1700,2100) where as my n79 has HSPDA on (900, 2100)

either way at somepoint att has to be upgrading to hspa 7.2 - I hope

T-Mo ofc, I just left AT&T with my 3G & 3GS, unlocked both, sold the 3G to help with the N900 cost, gave the 3GS to my girlfriend ( can't use 3G but 2G is fine with her ). ..I.. AT&T--- <3 T-Mobile.

I mean come on, the N900 needs it's 3G companion otherwise it's just a mediocre device.

AT&T runs its network on 850/1900 MHz. The N900 WCDMA (3G) radio only supports 900/1700/2100.

huh?

AT&T uses wcdma...

the iphone doesn't have wcdma... it uses:

UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

@wrb: WCDMA is what UMTS/HSDPA rides on.

rewt is correct. Both operators use UMTS, the difference being the frequency. During the FCC auction in 2007 T-Mobile acquired the 1700Mhz band for its UMTS uplink. To date there hasn't been too many handsets working on T-Mobile's UMTS frequency. Its good to see a ARM Cortex-8 device targeted to this US market even if T-Mo and Nokia couldn't/wouldn't brand the N900.
