how fast is normal ram access compared to read/write compressed data?

You can see some data from here:

http://code.google.com/p/compcache/wiki/Performance

So what I can tell, the used compression algorithm, lzo, is quite fast. But of course it cannot beat raw RAM speeds

Posting here too since it is more on topic in this thread than in the other one.

I wonder if renicing mmcqd as mentioned here http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...070#post338070 would help with the freezes or help general performance when booting from SD/MMC and/or swapping to it.

compcache/ramzez looks interesting but I'd guess (without any testing) it may actually make things worse due to more CPU usage and less real RAM left to be available for applications. benchmarks on the site are for faster machines with more RAM, the lowest configuration I found is here http://code.google.com/p/compcache/w...ce/under500MHz and it is still twice the memory and faster CPU and the results are not so great
HDD seems to fairly consistently outperform CompCache by a tiny margin on this machine. ..... both HDD swap and CompCache seem to give decent solid performance. Hence I would recommend that Pentium 500's use HDD swap if available
I guess I simply need to try it before judging :-)

Good points made , I haven't tried the mmcqd renicing before, gotta try that to improve the performance.

Compcache really does eat more CPU cycles but I am not sure how much more or less does it eat on the contrary to the internal/external swap. I tried to compile systemtap, with no avail yet, that would give some data . On the slower machine issue, I have thought that although ARM processors have less MHz than some Pentium machines, the actual instruction set efficiency should make the difference, I guess.

Ok, fixed now. Re-download from release 0.0.3. I missed a semicolon

sure you saved the new version? Downloaded twice from garage and got the same result when installing

Hmm, try the non-gregale deb? It does not contain anything else than the initscripts and the kernel module.

init-part ok, but ramzez stumbles with a lot of dependency problems. Installing with --force-all does not help. insmoding of modules not successful (os2006 and he2007)

Can you give more information? And what does this command print:
Code:
cat /proc/component_version
?
