I don't know about this icon. But the cellular layer is definitely coming, maybe not this time. too soon.

When you say cellular layer, do you mean support on the N800 to access the information on a phone, or actual hardware within the IT itself?

It s more complex than that. It will be hw AND sw, and in two steps:

1- sw + ... *
2- hw + sw

* : I m not talking of Skype. Unless the leak is totally unreliable, which I doubt.

Can someone explain to me what is a cellular layer? If it's enabling making phonecalls on the N800, i doubt that with the current hardware. Unless Nokia has hidden phone hardware and a SIM slot somewhere in the N800 like they did with the FM radio.
If you talk about making phonecalls from the N800 by using a separate mobile phone, what's the point? Can't i just use the mobile phone in the first place?
Or are we talking about something else?

it s adding cellular call capability directly and independently on the IT, and/ or the next version of the IT.

I totally ignore if the current IT has in its hw more hidden agenda than the FM radio receiver. I doubt.

I m not familiar with this word "layer" but this was the word used. My non specialist guess is that it means adding a new and essential function (ie: cell phone) that is modifying the concept of the device as a whole.

To reply to you last question: we are also talking about something else. There are other ways to add cell phone capability than having a SIM slot hidden or not :-)

I find myself hoping more and more that this Skype thingie will be available for the N800 as soon as possible. I break out in a nasty itchy rash each time I read "Skype" here in a topic title. It's even more overhyped than the iPh0ne at the moment.

(Remember what they say: Skype is hype, SIP is hip )
