Kinda funny... I went from the 6230 to the N900 as well, and love how the phone portion of the N900 works. The step up from the tiny 1" screen to the N900 was quite exilerating, and moving from Opera-mini to Moble B was a huge plus. So, for me I found the N900 a complete replacement.

I actually blew the cobwebs off my 6230 this week to put in a pre-paid sim from TMobil to test out signal strength in places I use my phone often. (I simply don't trust their on-line signal map thing... it lies, often.) I do still like how light it is, and T9 texting, but it's so limiting in other ways... I can barely stand to use it to test the signal strength, yet alone to go back to it as my day-to-day phone.

Glad to hear you still enjoy your 6230 though, and your iPad. You may want to get on selling your N900 soon. Electronics never go up in value. If you've decided you're done with it, sell it now, not later. (And if you think of it... put a link to tmo on the desktop before you sell it, so the new owner can find this forum easier.

iPad has the huge first mover advantage here - there are no credible alternatives available for purchase, so customers are not able to make a real choice. At this point, smart money shows some restraint and avoids the urge to buy anything right now.

I know iPad has a strong "ooh shiny" effect, probably stronger than other Apple products - but if you look into the whole gadget objectively, you'll see that it's nothing others wouldn't be able to do better.

Then, why so few words? Elaborate. I'm not saying I disagree...just boggled at such a non-response, especially that particular response.

Uhm... not quite. The iPad is not the first or the last tablet device. I had my first tablet (a Fujitsu model) running Win 3.11 back in the 90s. I've also owned a Toshiba Point 510 that ran Win95, which I later upgraded to Win98 and finally Linux (Slackware).

There have been lots of tablet based machines around, and are several out right now, from the U1 by Levino to the JooJoo. The iPad is far from a new concept, it's just the first time you can get one with an Apple logo on it.

I do agree that getting a Gen1 has it's disadvantages... but sometimes it's nice to have it, especially if it fits the need you're looking to fill. That's how I feel about my N900. If someone feels that way about their iPad, good for them.

iPad is pretty damn good because of its form factor and ui. Spend 5 minutes on it without seething anti-apple bias clouding your judgement and you'll probably find a few things to like that you'd want to bring back to your platform of choice (and you'll definitely spot a handful of things to dislike too; the lockdowns and all that).

It has all the advantages of pda/smartphone (instant on/off, intuitive ui, long battery life, etc) with the form factor that makes it more useable to manipulate 'normal' documents.

Commercial tablets have been touted for a while from Android to Windows based ones e.g the Courier. I have been following closely over the past two years as an avid e-reader. Nobody has been holding a gun to their head not to be released and be successful, they have had a while. Apple is a giant and has necessarily taken its time to present a respected product.

I sincerely believe that these tablets would have flopped if they came to market anyway. Noone has the ability to trailblaze the tablet market like the ipad will and as such I also don't agree with this
look at whole gadget objectively, you'll see that it's nothing others wouldn't be able to do better
.

That is why I say talk is cheap from users like the above, belittling Apples power to popularize a concept. Whilst giving free credit to competitors who haven't released products.

I beg to differ on that last part... I think Android (with froyo's glaze) can challenge the iPad, especially due to its 'better' multitasking and generally more open design (memory card friendly, less restrictions on the apps, etc) and a competitive finger friendly ui.

I think finger friendly is key. I don't care if it's capacitive or resistive, as long as it works as well as the current capacitive and does not require you to take out and sheath a pointy apparatus everytime you need to interact with the slate.

Possibly as its cheaper and sells by numbers but not from a single distributor IMO but we will see. I would be very suprised if they were seen as anything but cheaper ipad replacements.

So this post was just flamebait?

I don't get it. Did Nokia release a product in the same space as the iPad?

I find irony in how no other tablet maker this year has the sales numbers of Apple. Mind you; it's not saying it's a better product - it's not - but that now it's a wide-open market and nothing has come forth that... well, has sold well.

Talk may be cheap, but effective marketing isn't.
