Not a very usable design. I know that the mockup tries to fit in everything that's been recommended so far, but it could do with some simplifying. Here are some thoughts I've got after looking at it a few times:
- remove the touchpad. For the size of device(s), you want larger buttons for typing (this is the reason buttons were used instead of button pad on N900 - expectation was that of coding not navigation); replace with 5 buttons (up, down, left, right, center/select - last button might get 2nd function as additional Fn button or maybe make that 2nd function the Multitask button)
- no more than 3 stated functions per button: main = large and white, 2nd = top right superscript and also white, 3rd = top left superscript and red or blue
- ditch the multitask button's size. It should be as large as a number button if on that row
- move Fn button to under the Enter button
- span the size of the Enter button to be 1 row
- move Alt and Sym buttons to the left of the spacebar
- move comma and period buttons to the right of the spacebar
- tilda (~) button could go next to the "1" button, fitting a more common keyboard layout

I think that's all for now. Thanks for taking the time to make a mockup. It gives a bit better of a place to talk about what's wanted, what's usable, and what's doable.

I /query'd stskeeps to ask about I2C specs and other relevant data to start such project. No reply. Now I got a better idea about the whole topic - steer clear. Sorry

joerg, please go away with your doom and gloom predictions, if you didn't get the data doesn't mean its not there, in fact Jolla have been quite helpful on the subject and there is a good project in progress right now: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=91535

Predictions? Sorry, don't see any predictions, nor any "doom and gloom" - I just stated that I won't touch this task anymore since Jolla been NOT helpful, at least for me.

The project is exiting and they may have helped with something. But the fact stands and makes joergs point valid: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=241

There is a dedicated thread (with a lots of noise, unfortunately) where people are discussing what the qwerty OH could look like.

Here is a link: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=91539

I am certain that your designs would at least ignite some discussion there (I went quickly through the whole thread and did not notice that your designs would have already been posted there.)

Low-cost, low resolution "thermal camera" toh... anyone interested?
(But atleast better than just infrared non-contact thermometer).

http://pewa.panasonic.com/assets/pcs...ye-catalog.pdf

8x8 grid 60 degree view infrared sensor with I2C interface..

Combined with some camera software and graphics manipulation, you could get something close to Fluke VT02 (?)

Thinking about a simple CANbus interface for monitoring/logging data.
I haven't put that much thought into it but guess it should be doable with quite simple hardware.

I don't know if any of these has been mentioned before(I didn't read the whole thread, sorry):
1. What about a speaker toh with some better/bigger speakers amplified by a small circuit??
2. A wifi toh with external wifi antenna for better signal.
3. Some custom painted toh's(I haven't seen any )
4. Maybe a card reader toh with a small card reader in it, good for having much space on your phone
5. A cameraman toh with removable external lens for the camera, great for taking pictures from a big distance and maybe a small tripod hidden inside on toh for taking better pictures/videos!

I don't know if any of these ideas are possible, but these are some things that I would love to have on my phone from time to time(even if I don't have a jolla .. Just some ideas )

I need to take a closer look at the PDF to see the resolutiun, and what does the output look like compared to what my brain has associated with "thermal camera" from sci-fi movies bullshi*, but I might be interested for using that for work.

Would anybody work on that project, and develop the software part too? I have no skills for that.
