it is said there is receiver as well?
The driver software includes receiver funtionality, from what I read on that site. But the still leaves the question about th actual hardware open.

I would think a good way at this would be to port lirc to the N900, allowing the widely available configuration files to be used, or created on any other lirc host and transferred to the N900.

Some already at this:

qtirreco -- http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37655

Nokia-N900-42-11:~# apt-cache search lirc
lirc - Lirc server
libirman-dev - library for accessing the Irman Infra Red hardware
irreco-backend-internal-lirc - Internal Lirc backend for Irreco
irreco-backend-lirc - Lirc backend for Irreco
irreco-for-n900 - Irreco - Ir Remote Control

According to http://www.natisbad.org/N900/n900-co...are-specs.html

Infrared support is provided by lirc_rx51 module (drivers/input/lirc/lirc_rx51.c). It can be enabled via the following configuration option:

Code:
Symbol: LIRC_RX51 [=m]
Prompt: RX51 CIR transmitter
  Defined at drivers/input/lirc/Kconfig:19
  Depends on: !S390 && INPUT && INPUT_LIRC && LIRC_DEV && ARCH_OMAP
  Location:
    -> Device Drivers
      -> Input device support
        -> Generic input layer (needed for keyboard, mouse, ...) (INPUT [=y])
          -> Linux Infrared Remote Control IR receiver/transmitter drivers (INPUT_LIRC [=y])
            -> LIRC device loadable module support (LIRC_DEV [=m])

Alas, why I'll likely never recommend the N900 to my friends

Non-nerd apps; USB charging - generic and reliable; Distinctive ring tones; GPS failure to lock; Competitive "maps" application; Supported MMS, iSync, Bluetooth

(The feeble FM transmitter bugs me too)

What about the light sensor of the device? What sampling interval could that offer if queried as "directly" as posssible?

That particular patch just enables the IR option in the kernel, as well some driver (lirc) stuff for the transmitter, nothing RX51 specific about any receive sensor at all unfortunately.

You shouldn't need to do anything to make this work, the module should already be present (modprobe -l | awk /lirc/ ...if you see lirc_rx51.ko you're good)

The modinfo stuff:

+MODULE_DESCRIPTION("LIRC TX driver for Nokia RX51");
+MODULE_AUTHOR("Nokia Corporation");

I don't think the N900 got an IR receiver you can use, but look it up on the internet there should be instructions on how to build an IR transceiver you can plug on the mic and speakers plug of a PC soundcard (or you could even use somthing like a tape recorder or MP3 player with recording functions and transform that into an universal remote), it should be just a matter of adaptng the cabling for the N900 headset plug.

Use an external IR reciever and transfer the data to your n900...
n900 isn't the only device which runs irreco.

or make/buy an IR to audio transducer and fit it on your N900 and follow the procedures (don't ask me what the procedures are, ask Google)

I have QTirreco installed on my n900 and everything works fine with my Topfield satellite receiver and most of my Panasonic TV except one thing. The power button works when I turn the TV off but I am unable to turn the TV back on from standby with QTirreco.

I have a SKY remote which can operate the TV fine including the power, why does QTirreco struggle with turning the TV on? This is a TV where you have to hold the power button for several seconds before it powers on, I hold the power button within QTirreco, the red light on my TV flickers but that's it.
