When i try to enter monitor mode, the gui does nothing, xterm reports this...

try installing wireless tools?

apt-get install wireless-tools

i have eventually sorted it and got it working and managed to find my home router wep key in 10 mins. thanks for the pointers and help with this.

You've misunderstood. He is saying he is sorry for something completely unrelated. Nothing to do with OCing.

John the ripper from the repos does not work, which is what I was saying.
john.ini (i think) is missing and there is no /john or /John.
Please check that it is compiled and all files are in the *.deb.

theres no static version (really checkout there website) go to the dir and run it. i did it that way so you don't have to type "./john" while in the dir just.. "john".

anywhere else is going to give you that john.ini error your getting.
