Welcome, this is the right place.

The answer to your question is "Yes, you can load apps via USB"

No doubt a quick check of the wiki for Maemo5 will direct you to exactly how you need to do this. I'm not ssh literate so I am not the one to tell you.

Look here. Once you have a secure shell connection between your laptop and your N900 you ought to be able to move the applications you wish to install to the N900.

Have a look at this,
Maemo PC Connectivity
http://pc-connectivity.garage.maemo....ion/index.html

Using this you can connect your N900 to the internet through Bluetooth and USB.
Or alternatively search out the .deb files(applications) you want and transfer them over to your N900 in mass storage mode.
Once on the N900 go into filemanager and click on the .deb file you just transfered. It will open App Manager and install.

PC Connectivity is the quicker option and will connect you to internet.

I never understood everybody's hurry to overclock the n900. And I find it a big mistake to recommend it to a beginner. If he doesn't know yet how to install applications I doubt he will make the right decisions regarding overclocking. And then the next post will be on how crappy the n900 is because it crashes, hangs and corrupts files.
