A good thing would be a fullscreen shortcut, like CTRL + F.
kumatux (or something like this) can do that, but I couldn't get it to work

F6 is a common fullscreen key in many maemo applications. I mapped FN+Shift+1..0 to F1..10, so pressing FN+Shift+Y is a fullscreen toggle for most programs (not working in microb, though).

Thought I'd run the phone vanilla for a while after PR1.2 to see if it still slows down the same way after a week or so of usage, but damn I really miss modified-hildon-desktop and keyboard-shortcuts.
The last update to your description of modfied hildon desktop is made in April, is 2.0 just for making it PR1.2 compatible or is there something new included?

There is nothing new in modified-hildon-desktop. There is however change in hildon-status-menu, which allows a global shortcut for opening this menu.

and then rebooting (or at least restarting hildon-home and hildon-desktop) will allow GUI changong of backgrounds.
