SES (System Event Scheduler) is an app that lets you put your phone in silent mode or offline mode by time of day and day of the week.

Also, Mail for Exchange lets you set "Peak" and "Off-Peak" synchronization schedules with the server, and your "Off-Peak" schedule can include "sync manually only." I don't think that works for non-Exchange mail accounts though (webmail, POP accounts, etc).

Both M4E & Nokia Messaging let you configure the sync schedule

Yes the email client allows this.

I have all my email setup through Nokia messaging so to enable this setting, do the following:
1) Click on the main menu, select edit accounts
2) Select the account you want to edit - for me its Nokia Messaging
3) Click Synchronization
4) Set the Schedule.

On this screen you can set the days and hours that email will be retrieved for, works great and is similar to the schedule you could set in the symbian version of the Nokia Messaging client.

Nokia messaging on my n97 deletes messages older than one month, I need to keep some emails longer which normal client does properly.
