Greetings! I'd like to get an N900 and install plenty of open-source tools, such as screen, ed and curl. I see armel.deb packages available at http://repository.maemo.org/pool/fremantle/free/ but not at http://repository.maemo.org/extras/pool/fremantle/free/, which is the recommended repository.

Moreover, http://repository.maemo.org/ explicitly warns that the former repositories "are meant to be used with apt-get only within the SDK environment". Does this mean these three packages won't install successfully in the N900? Has anyone tried? Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

They will install but may cause harm to the device (example: fill up rootfs which will result in a brick)

I don't know about your general question, but there is a memo 5 screen package at: http://repository.maemo.org/fremantle/tools free non-free

I was planning to get the SDK going just to install screen when I came across http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/...5#Installation

I wonder how you know that. That is, how can you browse the contents of "http://repository.maemo.org fremantle/tools free non-free"?

Thanks again.

Run:

dpkg -i package.deb

As superuser to install directly from the .deb.

Thanks! Slightly off the topic... can I bypass installing rootsh by setting the root password with

sudo passwd root

and then simply typing

sudo dpkg -i package.deb?

I'd like to avoid installing rootsh if possible. Bear with me... I don't yet own one of these gadgets. (But I'm doing my homework!)

Thanks to all!

I had come across the link http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/...5#Installation somewhere else, which is part of why I did not list the base URL. If you scoll up in that page, there is quite a bit about what is in the repository.

Note also that the installations instructions include a link that you can click on with the browser on your device that saves you typing in the Application Manager the URL for the repository.

You will still have to use apt-get to install screen, though.

If you feel confident that you could recover your device from any problem (or want to learn), just try them and see. There are also a LOT of armel compiled .debs at debian.org. I've found that many of these work with no problems other than that they are not modified to the Hildon specification. If you aren't confident that you could recover, but REALLY want an app, maybe ask the programmer or someone what can be done.

On the other hand, if you are not sure you could fix your device if something went wrong, why take a chance with your new phone?

My guess is that since you know what screen and ed and curl are you can probably figure out what to do.

I sure hope so, but I want to play it safe! Thank you for your advice.
