My touch screen is bad (for now), is there a way to launch menus and/or apps using the keyboard?

Of course!
You could type CTRL+SHIFT+X to open X-Term. Now you can type the name of a program to launch it

Works fine for me. The problem is knowing what the application is called. For example, to run the notes app, just type "osso_notes".

Ctrl + Shift + X was introduced in Maemo 5's hildon-desktop. Pokey, you haven't said what device you're using.

See here:

You need to edit the python program to add or edit shortcuts, but it should not be too hard.
