You have to install xmmsctrl for this to work.
Still the ONLY maemo player has equalizer.
Because I am using this xmms often I put this command, xmmsctrl main 0 main 1, in advanced backlight in case someone needs it. (you can put in personal launcher too)

I had no problems at all installing this but I did manage to accidentally minimize the darn thing, a few times no less.

Each time when I clicked on xmms again from the application menu, is that bringing the program back up or am I just adding another one on top of all the others that went ghost on me?

I'm only asking since I had to do my first reboot in several months today.

Clicking "xmms" again simply brings the hidden player to the foreground. You can confirm this yourself by doing a "ps":
