This is a new thread about TrueCrypt as a means of sharing encrypted data. See the thread http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=15742
for more on encrypted partitions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is now possible to build TrueCrypt and use it with a standard OS2008 kernel. It requires the loading of the kernel module dm-mod.ko - which I've included in the deb. So if anyone would like to try it out, on the understaning that there's no promise it will work, or even that it won't break stuff, then the files needed are here http://mike.saunby.googlepages.com/truecryptforn800
I should probably add that my motivation was somewhat different, sharing encrypted FAT volumes between Windows and N810. So I've tested for quite different things. I say a bit more on my blog at http://mike.saunby.net and will post updates when I get more time to look at this. Could be days, could be months....
Post any findings, ideas, etc. here or email me.
Wow, I use this for Windows. I'll definitely try your version for OS2008. It's an easy to use program and works extremely well, so I'm hoping the same will be true for my N800.
Maybe one day. For now you'll have to try using it from the command line :-(
I'd rather see integration with file manager than another GUI. Though a GUI for volume creation might be useful for some users - rather than using a PC.
There's a simple little pygtk based gui for truecrypt called Easycrypt which might be easy to adapt for maemo. Have a look here.
I've been using TrueCrypt on Windows for several months and when I got my N800 a few weeks ago, I wanted to see if anyone had ported it.
Last I checked no one had tried porting TC to Maemo and just noticed yesterday that Mike had posted his port. I feel like I re-invented the wheel, but I did get my port working except for one annoyance.
This is the first time actually messing with an SDK, especially for crosscompiling on another platform so it was a really good learning experience.
Anyway, I can build an encrypted container, mount it, and put files in it. Then I can dismount it, copy the container file to a Windows box and mount it successfully. However, whenever I unmount the container on the N800, the truecrypt.ko module unloads itself but does not reload the next time truecrypt is called.
I haven't tried Mike's version but giving his .deb files a quick look, it seems like just about all the files he built (short of the docs/pdfs) are part of what I did as well, so it will take some more tinkering to see what I did wrong.
As far as the actual encryption, it definitely works because the volume mounts in the Windows version, and I also took a hex viewer to the file and it's a big mess of nonsense
Has anyone else tried this and had similar problem with the module unloading?
-Anthony
Ha I found my problem.
I made the target directories by hand and had accidentally made /usr/share/truecrypt/Kernel (capital K) instead of kernel (lowecase).
It works beautifully now.
If anyone else is trying their hand at getting this working and is running into problems, I can try to help if I can...
Two things:
1. Anyone take a crack at TrueCrypt 5?
2. Just a FYI, if you have the ntfs.ko module, you can use NTFS truecrypt containers. (Thanks to Free for compiling it!)
I dropped a copy of several of the custom .ko modules that I'm currently using on my n810 on my server if anyone wants any of them. (http://www.master-technology.com/mae.../n810ko.tar.gz)
Nathan.
