I'm used to using Opera Mini on my mobile phone or on my PalmTX tethered to my phone. This is handy as my data plan charges me a penny a kb, and by turning off images and using the page compression of Opera Mini each page ends up being about 6kb, making browsing affordable.

I'd love to be able to use my N800 / OS2008 with my phone for connectivity when I am out of wifi coverage, but I have a feeling that it would end up being prohibitively expensive using the built in browser.

My question is:
Anyone got any tips for minimising data usage when browsing using bluetooth/mobile phone for connectivity?

Thanks!

One way is to use this Google proxy:
http://www.google.com/gwt/n

By browsing through there the sites you go to get seriously trimmed down... no flash or javascript and optionally no images.

And here's some other similar proxies with slight variations. I can't vouch for how well they work since I just found most of these right now. But they looked functional, and some even looked better than the Google one.

Thanks Technut

Skweezer looks great - I like the ability to restrict pages to 5kb in size and turn the images off. Perfect.

BTW, sorrry about cut and pasting those links wrong in the X11 thread - it was late, I was tired, etc etc.

Cheers!

Opera mini is a java application.. no java support on the Nokia tablets yet. No ETA either, unfortunately.

For minimising data traffic on my N800 when on GPRS I have privoxy installed, and the bt pairing network configuration is permanently set to use the proxy. This'll filter out a lot of large images and all banners automatically. In addition I also often set 'load images' in Opera to 'only downloaded' (or whatever the English locale translation is).
