With the new 2006OS, you can add apt repositories so that application can be automagically downloaded and installed (or updated).

While we are waiting for additional 3rd party repositories, maemo.org has a mistral-beta repository with good stuff like osso-xterm and ssh.

Add new catalogues with the following settings -

Web Address: http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: mistral-beta
Components: free

and

Web Address: http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: mistral-beta
Components: non-free

You will be able to install osso-xterm from the GUI after the package update. For command line applications like openssh, you will need to install it from apt-get.

To get a root prompt in the terminal, set RD to enable with the flasher. Alternatively, you can install the dropbear ssh packages and ssh into the tablet as root. The default root password is rootme.

Then follow the 2005OS instructions to modify gainroot for convenience.
