I have occasionally noticed that all posts get wiped from one or more feeds in the RSS reader. I cant find any pattern for this. Marking posts as "Keep for later" doesnt seem to protect against this complete wipe.

Until now I had assumed that it was a combination of the posts being old or that the reader had some kind of maximum number of posts it could hold before posts got overridden.

A few minutes ago though every feed got wiped clean, the most recent of which had a post which was just 2 days old. Im fairly surely that posts normally dont disappear that quickly. What I would like to know is:

1) Is this a known problem and if so is there any workaround?
2) How long are posts normally kept by the reader?
3) Is there a maximum number of posts that the reader can hold?

Nobody is using the default reader. Try e.g. FeedingIt.

The only reason I use the default one is because of the widget.

I assume that only the default reader can be used with the widget and I dont see any other RSS widgets to download. Are either of these assumptions wrong?

If you install FeedingIt, it automatically comes with a widget. The only bad thing is that it isn't (yet) as good as the default widget (it only shows how many unread posts you have in each of your RSS feeds).
