Im sorry this is in the wrong section and it does have have something to do with the n900 plus other devices.
Iv noticed with every device that could run another os its always ubuntu, from the n8x0 to the dell streak....why? I thought ubuntu would be to heavy to run...has any one tried to run a os such as puppy linux, or Lubuntu ....at first I thought maybe cause ubuntu has the better driver support but wat I learned it seems like most linux distro are built up using either debian or ubuntu such as lubuntu has the same drivers as its bigger brother but extremly lite,
I would love to support it and I reckon Im not the only 1.......folk have ported android over and Im gonna put my head on the line and Im sorry but why the n900 deserves something abit more, you can pic up a android device now for under £90 ..Im not bad mouthing I respect wat theese guys are doing......Just Id rather have a device that could duel boot into a mini pc intead of a device that can boot from a phone to another phone.

Im still learning about open Os so I apoligise if Iv just made my self look like a big T*T lol and maybe some one could tell my why it cant be done ect ect

It's not ubuntu that's heavy, it's the WM (window manager: i.e Gnome & KDE).

You can boot any Linux build you want. As long as it's built for OMAP 3.
Arch, debian, meego, fedora all run. You can run anything.

You message is not in the wrong section, it's on the wrong site. You should be able to find a better place to ramble on about Ubuntu. Oh, and if you are in school, try some classes in English composition.

Debian runs on the n900, although I believe there are people who have got Ubuntu running. It is a lightweight desktop, not gnome. If that is what you are asking about, then look at Easy Debian, it is installable from the repositories.

I cant really seem to understand it either. I think Ubuntu is the most user friendly linux distro out there for beginning linux users or something.

I undestand ubuntu is easy but as some one stated earler gnome is heaver than say lxde or xfce....lubuntu is lxde and only needs 128 MiB of RAM and all the apps are not as heavy so you have google instead of firefox,....
were ubuntu with gnome needs 512mb....plus some of the apps can be heavy...

Iv ran the 2 Oss and there was a big differnece in speed this includes start up and apps running....so what Im saying is wouldnt the nokia n900 benefit from a lxde/xfce as its 2nd os for pc tasks?

Easy Debian is LXDE. Runs iceweasel and open office, gimp, etc.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian

Ubuntu is an OS based on Debian. LXDE, Gnome, etc., are not OSs, they are desktop managers, or what used to be called graphical user interfaces that sit on top of the core OS. So, Ubuntu is ubuntu+gnome, Kubuntu is ubuntu+KDE, Lubuntu is ubuntu+LXDE, and so on. You can install ubuntu, which has gnome, and then install LXDE, KDE, XFCE, and run whatever you want. But, on the n900 there is Easy Debian, which runs LXDE, and I am not sure there would be any advantage in trying to run Ubuntu and gnome - although it would be nice if you could.

Looks like kubuntu will have a KDE mobile plasma shell before other distros. This video is old but there is now the possibility to run kubuntu with the meego kernel/modules........Interesting times.

I think maybe also from a popularity point of view, Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distro. If your going to port one to your device, port the one that most users have heard about or used before, which in turn increases users using it. I'm sure there are many other linux distros around that are much more suited to tablets, but if you haven't heard about them before, your less likely to try it.

I'm only thinking of this from a different point of view, I honestly have no clue about the differences between distros.
