Hi all, I have to use WinSCP and Putty to work with files on my N900.
Isn't there a file manager with root permission capabilities?

TIA

LOL.
First time read it, thought you wanted to run OSSO filemanager as root.

Yes, the answer to your question is simple - Linux.(;

Oh and I recommend using mobaxterm rather than winscp and putty.

But yeah burn a live-cd or something, you'll save yourself the aggravation in the long term

Well, assuming you've got the gainroot add-on, there's always the shell. I'm happiest in the shell, so do almost all of my file management from there.

If that's not quite your bag, then how about just starting this as root:

midnight commander - a powerful file manager

GNU Midnight Commander is a text-mode full-screen file manager. It uses a two panel interface and a subshell for command execution. It includes an internal editor with syntax highlighting and an internal viewer with support for binary files. Also included is Virtual Filesystem (VFS), that allows files on remote systems (e.g. FTP, SSH, SMB servers) and files inside archives to be manipulated like real files.

Well, actually I believe the OP is trying to access the files on the N900 via a Windows computer (based on their mention of winscp and putty*)

and the problem they have (I assume) is trying to access files owned by root (perhaps even by user in some cases) due to Windows getting confused. There is probably a workaround for Windows users, but none that I have heard of.

*= yes putty is available for *nix, but no one is stupid enough to use it when they have every variety of native *nix terminals at their fingertips

Dokan may be what you are looking for.

It will mount a remote filesystem on windows using ssh. If you login as root, you should be able to have full access from the file-manager.
