I don't have a N900 yet, but i made a small flash file wich turns your nokia in to an ambient light.

Once you have a N900 (or jsut install Scratchbox on your PC to play around right now), you can also install my moodlight application instead :-). This is a proper python app that is fully integrated in the Maemo environment. You can switch between hues and color cycling speed by touching the screen. It also features a flashlight mode.

I really liked a proper led flashlight on my n5140i... it was actually usefull... all this screen flashlights are a poor excuse most of the time.
