Is it possible to rename applications on a N9?

yes, unless you are restricted to modify .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/

''modify'' as in renaming the .desktop files? tried that wt no luck..

Inside the desktop file there is a line starting with "Name=", that's what you have to change.

transfer it to pc, edit in notepad++ or something and transfer back in mobile.
