Yes you can, but you won't be able to reflash thru terminal tough.

here is how to update via terminal.
$sudo gainroot
$apt-get update
$apt-get upgrade

We obviously do not understand what you want to achieve. Can you explain?

To be clear:
I want to update my phone to fw 1.2 which would be normally done on a pc via a flasher program

But as I cannot use usb on NOKIA N900
I want to do instead through X Terminal on the Nokia N900 itself

Again - you do NOT need any USB connection to do this. You do NOT need XTerm neither. Just use the built in AppManager.
And that is normally NOT done via maemo-flasher. That what is SSU for - Seamless Software Update, done OTA(Over The Air). You just need internet connection. You flash your phone only when it has some kind of problem and you want to start fresh.
And between it is PR1.3 that is the up to date version for N900. NOT 1.2.
PS. If you insist on using Xterm see the post of renowong.

I think the OP has a problem and wants to start fresh. Yes, flash.

You can reflash the kernel from xterm. It's described in the Overclocking Wiki docs, at least. Takes about 5 seconds.

I think there should be a way to do a complete flash from xterm, but I've never seen it fully described.
