Under the new structure, effective July 1, Nokia's Devices and Services business will be divided into three units--Mobile Solutions, Mobile Phones, and Markets--the Espoo-based company said.

The Mobile Solutions unit will focus on the high-end mobile computer and smartphone portfolio, the Mobile Phone unit will concentrate on Nokia's mobile phone portfolio based on the Series 40 operating system, and the Markets unit will be responsible for sales and marketing, supply chains and sourcing, Nokia said.

"We believe that this will allow us to build stronger mobile solutions," said Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.

The Mobile Solutions unit will be headed by Anssi Vanjoki and will comprise MeeGo Computers, led by Alberto Torres, and Symbian Smartphones, headed by Jo Harlow. Tero Ojanpera will lead the Services division within the Mobile Solutions unit.

Nokia said it has also appointed Rich Green as Chief Technology Officer.

The Mobile Phones unit will be headed by Mary McDowell, and Markets will be led by Niklas Savander, Nokia said. Kai Oistamo assumes the role of Chief Development Officer and head of Corporate Development.

Meanwhile, Rick Simonson who currently heads Mobile Phones, has decided to retire from his full-time duties at Nokia although he will continue as a senior advisor to the company, Nokia said.

Well I'm glad they're doing something about it.

This is as clear indication as can be that Nokia has acknowledged there are issues with their management that's hindering their performance.

They can re-structure all they like.

But the pertinent question is "Do they understand the smartphone market?"

At the moment it's "No".

I have to say I'm 100 % confident that they understand the smartphone market very well. It's the execution that lacks IMHO.

Isn't it a sign of understanding the smartphone market that they're putting high end and services together in one division that'll be headed by one of their highest ranking execs. (Vanjoki lead Nokia's phone unit in EMEA 94-98 and globally 98-03)

...and just another Nokia re-orga - until it's effective they will lose even more time.
Nokia should focus back to customers instead concentrating on themselves.

They've wasted an enormous amount of time with reorganising, developing "stratagy" and constantly changing software direction that the market is growing without them.

The 3 recently launched mobile phones/smartphones have been underwhelming and shareholders are losing confidence.

Something had better be done soon or the lucrative high-end smartphone market will completely lock them out.

The n900 and maemo-based software is a failure. When the n900 was launched last year there was an enormous buzz within the industry. Then Nokia messed it up.

Nokia's current direction is heading for "budget" phones/smartphones.
Other companies are enjoying high-end, premium priced devices and the bigger profits that go with that (e.g. larger margins and credible app stores).

Just out of curiosity, what exactly did they mess-up (industry-wise, not counting the Ovi Store) ? What did 'the industry' think about the N900 and maemo-based software ? Or does industry mean simply bloggers ? Signals are that the N900 was/is selling better than expected, and overall did a good job introducing Maemo to the GSM world, warts and all.

When the N900 was announced, Nokia's shares went up.

I actually don't expect the market to be much impressed by Symbian. I do expect them to be stunned by MeeGo.
