Vanilla is based on Telepathy-sofiasip, which is based on Sofia-SIP.

Telepathy-sofiasip could be upgraded from 0.6.2 to 0.7.1 (unless there are dependency problems? such as having to have old-ish telepathy?). Oh... It was even renamed to telepathy-rakia and reached version 0.99.11.
Implemented o.fd.Tp.Protocol (what is it?) in version 0.7.0.

Sofia-SIP could be upgraded from current 1.12.10 version to more recent 1.12.11 (it should be easy, right?). Full set of transports, including both TCP and UDP over either IPv4 or IPv6, is supported. Signaling can be secured with SSL/TLS.

So, first upgrade the Sofia-SIP, then upgrade the telepathy (a lot of bugs should have been fixed by new releases?), then, if encryption is still not supported, push this feature into mainstream telepathy-rakia (or sofia-sip; not sure which package should contain this feature).

Best wishes.
