I think that is generally the key to getting linux/bsd system to work. They work better with older components/add-on cards. Lagged driver support and all that...

PS: It also makes a difference how you connect them all together. HDMI would be the trickier one (audio + video, and it has auto negotiating video sync info), followed by DVI and VGA.
