I agree with this up to a point. The problem I have is with not caring about "what's under the bonnet" as you may be losing functionality or performance because the hardware is not designed with OS in mind. A simple example is using a virtual machine for Linux on windows computer. Also, chrooting linux on android, while can be useful, leaves something to be desired.
