Thanks for your suggestions! These are interesting. I may consider them in a later release. Well, there's already an app for that, called "Alarm", and installed by default on the N900. You can already select text - just not with your finger, as drag events are handled by the desktop and not forwarded to the widgets. You can select text with pressing and holding the shift key, plus one of the arrow keys.
