It's the interruption of power supply to the system.
Doing it cleanly (sw reboot / power button) should be less critical than popping out the battery.

The HW interface and flat cable of the 770 LCD is different from the n800 one, we did have at an early stage some adaption wing for using 770 panes on n800 macroboards, but nothing that you could fit in a real device.

About where to get spares, I don't know, I replaced mine with a spare LCD from the lab, but I suspect you might actually find something on google, there are websites specialised in selling replacement LCDs. But stay assured that this would void your warranty, so I see no reason why you would want to take the risk.
