so PLEASE if anyone knows if and where maemo stores the .deb installation files after one has downloaded and installed an app using Application Manager, I'd be truly thankful
By default, Application Manager automatically clears out the cache. To have debs left in /var/cache/apt/archives, you'll need to:
  1. Launch Application manager
  2. Open Application manager's menu.
  3. Open the "Tools" sub-menu.
  4. Tap "Application catalog..."
  5. In the "Catalogs" dialog that opens, tap the "New" button.
  6. In the "New catalog" dialog that opens, replace "http://" in the "Web address" line with "matrix" (without the quotation marks).
  7. Tap the "Cancel" button.
  8. In the "Which pill?" dialog that appears, tap "Red".
  9. In the "Catalogs" dialog, tap the "Close" button.
  10. Open Application manager's menu.
  11. Open the "Tools" sub-menu.
  12. Tap "Settings".
  13. In the "Settings" dialog that opens, uncheck the box next to "Clean apt cache".
  14. Tap the "Ok" button in the "Settings" dialog.
  15. Open Application manager's menu.
  16. Open the "Tools" sub-menu.
  17. Tap "Application catalog..."
  18. In the "Catalogs" dialog that opens, tap the "New" button.
  19. In the "New catalog" dialog that opens, replace "http://" in the "Web address" line with "matrix" (without the quotation marks).
  20. Tap the "Cancel" button.
  21. In the "Which pill?" dialog that appears, tap "Blue".
  22. In the "Catalogs" dialog, tap the "Close" button.
  23. Install any and all applications of interest.
