One addendum to the original howto:

Not all SD cards > 2GB are SDHC; I have 2 4GB SD cards in my N800 that has not been patched for SDHC cards. These non-HC cards are however more and more difficult to find and not every card will work in every device, as they rely on subtle trickery and shenanigans with the SD specs.
