I use..ffmpeg

ffmpeg -i 01.mp4 -vcodec libx264 -ab 128 -b 700000 -s 852x480 output.mp4

mplayer + kmplayer accepted ..mkv .. mp4...divx ...also supports embedded subtitles

Graphic video converter apps...Handbrake ... Avidemux... very cool !
