Bachviet are you sure? Just cause sounds come out from both sides doesn't mean that the sound is stereo. Out of the box OS2008 should support mono, but you can immediately hear that the sound quality...

Mplayer is definitely the best player around, but you shouldn't expect miracles. Most files I threw at it without re-encoding played, but choppy and no way was I able to skip to a scene or anything....
