What a nice Idea. Extra battery of keyboard doesn't have to be connected to I2C. Just bigger one or many in the batteryslot and part of the cover that grips to phone.
Is it wrong to power lights...

Just destroyed E90. It has 125 x 40 mm keyboard in 5 rows without shortcuts. I've tried to see key-matrix but it was insanely high-tech-space-age. Instead of buttons it had small strips of metal...

I'm changing to 8428, it's cheaper, easier and has internal pullups :D but 8418 does not. What about 3-key at the same time. Just like Ctrl+Alt+Del... Manuals only said that keys must be wired other...

I also started something like this my self. But only to share my investigations for someone else interested as a kick-start.
I think that TCA8418 is more suitable for mobile devices. Full Qwerty...

I have all keys configured from settings, but none of those make any actions in game. Like game is not listening my commands. This same happen's with PCSX.
In PSX4ALL I can use exit -key
