Yes, that should be the setting.
As for the log, ~/.claws-mail might be a good place to start, if logging to disk is enabled. If disabled, the option is at Configuration > Preferences > Logging....

The server for receiving and SMTP server field shouldn't have @gmail.com. It should be imap.gmail.com for receiving and smtp.gmail.com for SMTP. As for the ports, it should be 587 on SMTP and 143 for...

It's running under Maemo. Did a bit of a workaround though, I just dug around the config files and saw ~/.claws-mail/folderitemrc. Read it, and saw
offlinesync=0
enabled it and offline sync works....

to bypass app manager to install this.
also, if you are *absolutely* sure that app manager isn't running, you can manually remove the lockfile and everything might...

true.
i just rely on my email (claws-mail+imap idle) notifying me when twitter delivers a notification. it's not reliable though and the emails themselves are oftentimes delayed.

i use twimgo. it's not perfect but it gets the job done. for uploading media to twitter, you can install sharing-twitter-multi.

the gconf step wasn't done by me. it was being done by dpkg automatically. i ran a find / -iname *key-actions* with no result. the directory doesn't exist in the folder either.

phone came with extras-devel enabled; uboot and rescueOS installed
he did warn me about not doing a dist-upgrade though.

i'll take note of that. i should just upgrade packages with HAM instead? (got used to kubuntu and doing dist-upgrades whenever new packages come out)
