It is in host mode, i switched it over manually (not with the cable or the program) it works with a usb flash drive so I know that I have that much configured correctly. I will try to get a dmesg...

update: i believe you are correct that it is a pl2303 chipset since my debian laptop loads that module and works, it does not load the ftdi module.

I just tried doing an
# insmod usbserial.ko
# insmod pl12303.ko
# ls /dev/ttyUSB0
Unfortunately the device never shows up and it still gives me the same error that the device is not supported. ...

clarification: the device crashes when the usb serial adapter is plugged into the usb port, not when the modules are inserted.
